Catbells

Yesterday morning we hiked Catbells, a fell just across the lake from Keswick. It was spectacular.

One experienced hiker we met said that this is one of the most beautiful hikes in the Lakes. I believe it. On our first day in Keswick we met a man who said that the hike up Catbells is so easy, a granny in bedroom slippers could do it. Having made it to the summit I'm willing to believe the granny, but maybe not the bedroom slippers. It took us about 90 minutes to get from start to the summit a distance of only 1 mile and an ascent of 1200 feet. Maybe I really am NOT as young as I used to be. We did make it to the top before the six and seven year old boys who started the same time we did (and their parents). I think it's just mean of Victoria to point out that we only beat the six year old to the top by 3 minutes; we got there before him and that's what gets put in the record books.

Afterwards we drove down to Bowness on Lake Windermere. Apparently the natural beauty of the region isn't enough and they needed to add a full blown amusement park to the edge of town. About 50 yards from this church.

When out hiking it's easy to forget that this whole region is a vacation resort community for the Brits and that the American way of extracting money from tourists is a natural consequence. There are still smaller or out of the way towns that haven't been infected yet, and next visit we'll stick to those (and I still say Keswick isn't as intense as Ambleside or Windermere).
